I try to book award travel 331 days in advance, when the flight first appears in Delta's reservation system. Even that doesn't always work! I have two M-class tickets to France in June/July. Upgrades cleared immediately on the outbound flight, but even with Platinum priority, we have been on the waitlist continuously since August for the return flight (from Nice). Interestingly, this flight is actually selling out -- not too many seats are left on the seat map. Two of my kids may end up flying coach!

Nice is one of the toughest upgrades to get in the entire DL system in the Summer, as everyone wants to vacation in the South of France. It is totally impossible during the Cannes Film Festival. I had to threaten the corporate office with never flying DL again and had screaming matches with them, 2 years ago. for end of July upgrades from JFK. They finally gave in 1 week before the trip after I had called for 2 months on the issue.
