Given that there is a cost to the card after the first year, I was thinking that I should cancel the card after the points for the initial purchase get posted to my account.

Also, the more credit cards one has, the more your credit rating gets reduced (it's a readily available way for one to build up instant debt--at least that's what I heard from a credit counselor I overheard).
