If those are the options, I would too. But then I have many more 500's than I could ever use.
Well... AFAIK, UA does not publish the fare break rule. But they may not publish the O&D distance rule either?
Unless they publish both, and indicate that the fare break takes precedence, then you would have a reasonable expectation (if not an FTer) that you are trying to get around the rules. I don't think that is the case however.
Are you feeling lucky, punk?

Check in online at 24 hours prior. Then, assuming the upgrades clear, check your e-summary to see how many were pulled. If it pulled more than 2, call up web support and have them un-check you in. Then call and ask to be downgraded.
As a side note, I was trying to upgrade a multi-flight itinerary last week (including a 3 class domestic flight). Checked in and the 3 class flight had yet to clear. Sitting and waiting for my delayed outbound to leave and I see that my upgrade cleared, but it pulled more than the point-to-point distance. Asked a UX gate agent to uncheck me in then recheck me in and tried to explain the reason, but I don't think they completely understood. Surprisingly, out pops a BP for F on the 3 class (even though the website said Upgraded business) and the correct number were pulled!
