In my view it all depends on the consequences of missing a flight. Go ahead and book a tight connection on a trip home, say, LAS-YUL-YOW. No big deal if you misconnect at YUL. On the other hand, if you miss your connection to that once daily flight on your way TO your vacation and will lose a precious day, or when you miss that important meeting because you wanted to save an hour: well, why cut it close?
As we all know, it only takes one thing -- slight delay on the outbound, traffic on arrival, no gate available on landing, wait at the baggage claim, long lines at security, etc. etc. etc... I, for one, hate being stressed about it.
So . . . I made the call to AC a couple of days ago - explained the situation to the agent, and gently asked them to move us from 400 (0700) to 480 (0630).
"Sorry sir, but I'd have to charge you a change fee and fare differences for that."
"Is there a lead/supervisor/fairy godfather you can ask for approval/blessing/virginal sacrifice for this pitiful supplicant?"
"No, but if you show up early at YYZ, there's only 30 people on that first Airbus and they will put you on it."
