There seems to be a major tendency for these fares to soften sometime dramatically as the flight date approaches. For example several months out I was quoted a flight at $410 while competitiors offered fares for $280. Two weeks letter Delta fares were $280, but I had already bought a ticket on another airline.

I have noticed this as well. 4 weeks out a fare may be $400+, but just two, or even 1.5 weeks out, it drops to ~$250.
