China. When I visited Shanghai 2 years ago on business, I expected a not-too-rich Asian country, sort of like Thailand. Instead, I saw an incredibly modern skyline (New York architecture looks antique compared to Shanghai), and a bustling city. I found that, in almost every restaurant I visited, at least one staff member could speak English -- and this applies to non-tourist restaurants not located in the middle of downtown. I expected that after so many years of Ant-American propaganda, English wouldn't be so popular. Compare that to Japan, one of the richest Asian countries, where almost no one speaks English, anywhere. I also did some weekend traveling in the countryside, and even there, I was able to use some English. I was very surprised.
