Of course if your first leg is actually the long-haul flight you are taking then just ask for upgrade in the check-in. When you are ready from the lounge, they usually already have the new boarding passes ready at the gate (and then they want you to sign the papers). That has been my experience all the time and I do not use my points for free flights but only for upgrades.
My point of departure is ARN, so i imagine they have the infrastructure to handle that at checkin, but what about when i return departing from SIN? would it be safest to have the voucher there or are they likely to be able to do it "online" as well.
