I was on a DTW/LAX flight that had no carryon bin space in Y
I was on a DTW/LAX flight in January and the GA had allowed at least 20 bags more than could be stowed onboard.
Then a hollywood cameraman with a large camera case came onbpard. He was asked by the GA to give up his camera bag (gate check it) and refused. He said it had over 6K in camera equipment and he always took it with him as carryon.
The GA threatened to call security and then the LFA offered to unpack the FC closet and stow this camera gear there. The pax explained he had been on a late inbound flight and just made it to the connection. I felt that the LFA went above and beyond to accomodate the carryon (certainly the GA didn't offer a win/win solution)
