Of course there is a benefit for having the sequence number.
Just gave you an example, on one of my LH flights to YVR ex-FRA, the document & passport checkers used the sequence numbers as the identity of the pax. I guess it helps the checkers not to have a pre-judgement by reading the names of the pax.
