I can understand the premium needed for the transaction as the payment for each passenger appears as a separate amount for each ticket. However why have to make 3 separate transactions for each passenger?
Well techincally the way BA charge it is best at recovering the commission Amex, MC, Visa take from the transaction which is a certain percentage of the amount charged.

Debit cards I believe are a fixed cost no matter what the amount charged is, only a few pence, if not a fraction of a few pence.

Not that I think it is right though
