This a decision that will make no-one's life appreciably or even noticeably better (you tell us if you get a seat more often after 6 months of the new arrangements, DaveC - I won't hold my breath) but make many people's specifically and appreciably worse and so fits in well with a long tradition that accelerated (but did not start) in 1997.
Though GEX have been pretty pathetic, failing to react to Southern's price-campaign (ever thought that that's why Southern trains are so full, DaveC?) and failing to think about improvements (faster turnround) 'til a gun was at their head.
Also, DaveC, you can forget the last two schemes you name - ever. Too. Much. Money. Though this spineless, please-all-but-please-no-one Government will continue to p!ss £50m a year indefinitely "consulting" on them rather than bite the bullet.
