Regardless of being on an eVIP or even a miles+co-pay upgrade, this would cost AA significantly more than the marginal cost a typical upgrade requires. For that reason, I find it hard to believe (and very foolish if true) that AA would officially subscribe to such a policy.

I almost agree, but the OP missed the connection because of BA. According to the OP it was weather related, so I'm not sure if BA had to do anything, but maybe the
agreement is for the partner airlines to accomodate the paxs in the same cabin if the missed connection was their fault to begin with.
Let's not forget the new EU compensation regulations. It may have been in BA's best interest to help out in a situation like this.
