We have the Laptops-out-polycy since many years at our home-airport in MUC. It is much longer than in some other German Airports (Bavarian security rules in MUC and NUE are a bit stricter!). So on other Airports I normally ask: "Do I need to take my laptop out?"

It does not make you waiting longer:
Most people know it in advance. So I pack my Laptop that I can take it out and in in two seconds.
Everybody is asked by the security staff before putting his luggage on the belt "Do you have a Laptop" in German or in English, if you do not answer or react they normally friendly say COMPUTER??? and will gesture to pack it out! So it is actually no delay. You get it out while you are waiting.

When it was introduced in MUC it was a real improvement. I remember the times (when I was one of the few people traveling with a "Portable Computer" I wouldnt call that Laptop):
- Your Computer had to be weighted and they had a list with the weights of all models. So they checked that you did not change anything!
I patched my Motherboard so I always had problems with that dam thing (How do you explain a security guy in the early 90ies that you had to add an extra heat-element because you changed the clock-speed of the processor).
- You had to switch it on!
- Than they had to made a special "Explosive" test (which they do now always with my video-projector)
- When I traveled with a Whole PC as my hand-luggage (w/o screen only the Computer) it took me some minutes of checking more...
This has been for many years traveling with computer equipment.

So come on! Dont complain about this. You will be used to it after some flights. The delays in LHR at the security I had are form that new rule that every arriving Passenger has to clear security when connecting. So when departing form Gate 28 you have to clear a second time the security.

I understand that there are some Airports that are not so secure but when you arrive form the US or Israel you arrive form very safe Airports you are considered as arriving form an unsecure Airport and have to go through security again! These rules were introduced with a very short advance warning, but it involves major changes and many inconvenience in many Airports.

Just smile when taking your Laptop out!

Once I was in AYT some years ago, the security guy was asking:
"How much did your Computer cost?"
When I said the price to him he yelled "Cool I won!!"
They had a game where the guy who checked the most expensive laptop was the winner. I made him Lucky and we had funny talk!
