I was on the phone with ual.com web support the other day and was basically told use the certificate (f&f in this case), get your 15% off and buy a non-upgradeable fare and live with it or buy an upgradeable fare and don't use the cert - too bad. Oh yeh, or I can get the 15% off with the S/T fare, and then call up and pay for the upfare - of course there would be no 15% off and at that point, I should have just bought it for full price from the beginning. I found their response totally unacceptable so I sent an email to 1K Voice. The response i got from them was an explanation that some international fares aren't upgradeable ... these certs on that website equal useless fodder.
