Why not try using some upgrade vouchers to move your friends from economy to premium economy. I see that you are a gold card holder and as you are present you may be able to use them. They are pretty worthless in the main. With PE they can use the lounge.
They may not allow the upgrade if you are already in biz but it's worth a try.
