747s... what are the US-based airlines justifications for/against flying them?

Just curious if anybody knows the "official company line" for why certain carriers fly 747s internationally and others don't. Specifically, I am thinking of reasons why UA & NW do fly 747s, and AA, DL, CO, and US do not. As a followup, are any of the US-based carriers planning to use A-380s?
