A C award is 90,000 miles on M&M, so the upgrade (100,000 miles) is actually more expensive, not almost as expensive.
Of course, you'll also get miles for your paid ticket, but then again, you'll have to pay for the ticket, too.
Oh, I forgot, the ticket is paid by the employer, and that's exactly why many pax don't care and upgrade with miles no matter what.
