Haven't cut it that close on AS, but was once at EWR about 25 mins before departure on UA and the agent hassled me a bit, so I politely asked him to just give me a security checkpoint pass and I'd have the RCC take care of me on a later flight.

He then checked me in and gave me my pre-assigned seat.
