From what I've seen this is no longer the case. It used to be that to get changes in status reflected in a reservation, you needed to have reservations remove and re-enter your MP#. Now the status change seems to happen automatically, and your real status will be reflected in the system when it changes.
My experience has been slightly different. My record showed my new 1K status but my upgrade cleared right at 72 hours. I asked my travel agent to re-enter my MP# and then on the return the upgrade cleared at 100 hours. Not conclusive but it sure looked like that for upgrade purposes I was still 1P until my # was re-entered.
