To the OP: Why does it matter, you have indicated that you have only recently flown your first transcon after much debate about which route to take and then beign unhappy with your First Class experience. Its clear you arent going aiming to be in F on a 762 so what does it matter about the contracts...they exist, as does 3 class service from UA, as do the travellers connecting to transpacific First flights...

I could care less about F on a "two class" 762 vs. 763. They are basically the same, and not like F on a three-class plane. What I would really like is to have a J seat on a 762 and spend no miles, spend no stickers, and get it at booking. I have learned that domestic premium class travel is all about the seat. I am paying my 15k not to have a Y seat, and to try and get the best non-Y seats available. The service is so marginal that it doesn't matter. I either want my 15k to go as far as possible in all respects, or get something pretty darn close to what I get now for no extra cost (J sold as Y). And, I've flown transcons before, in 738s, and it's been a lot better.

To the posters who mentioned fog: I would only route home through JFK. Then, I usually have some extra time to kill, and would always take a JFK flight that left SFO before my BOS flight, so I don't take any risk, except if there are problems in NY, in which case I wouldn't try and switch.
