There is no "cooperative mileage exchange" within *A, however UA and LH do have a special agreement to allow UA FFP members to upgrade on LH flights.
Your friend would need to request a paper LH paper upgrade voucher from UA MP, and then present that voucher at check-in. You can do a search on the LH board (
