The reputation for having problems with the battery is almost entirely attributable to two brothers who created a video and web site three years ago that became very widely distributed. The brothers claimed that the battery in iPods only lasts 18 months and could not be replaced. The battery in their iPod did seem to only last 18 months. They had an early generation iPod (1st gen or 2nd gen, I believe). I have an abused 1st gen that still functions and still holds a charge, however, just to provide some comparison. In addition, at that time and currently, it's been possible to purchase 3rd party battery replacement kits for as little as $30.

Just prior to their web site and video being published, Apple had already assembled the extended warranty program, and it was released shortly after the web site came out.

Millions watched the video. It became the latest hit in anti-man/DIY campaigns. The lawyers eventually joined the bandwagon and initiated a class action suit that was later settled. Early generation iPod owners were eligible for some sort of sliver of a piece of pie while the legal teams made off with the remaining slices.

In the end, it left Apple with a reputation that all the batteries for all iPods are crappy. In truth, it all depends on how they're used, how they're charged, etc. Apple claims that their batteries will last 300 charging cycles. Apple has released at least 10 new models (off the top of my head) since the brothers made their claim. But due to the sensational way the brothers' story spread, it still occupies a place in our minds.
