I spent two nights in CHC earlier this month. On the day between, I took the TranzAlpine to Greymouth and back.

1. The TranzAlpine was nice but I was there in the summer. It would probably be incredible in the winter with snow on the mountains.

2. Many people get off the train halfway to Greymouth. I've forgotten the name of the place, but there didn't appear to be much there. I think it may be a location for venturing further for backpackers and campers.

3. Greymouth is a really small town, but you are only there for an hour or so, just longer enough to eat lunch and mail a postcard.

4. I cannot possibly say enough great things about Christchurch. Yes, it is a pretty small city. It is also one of the most beautiful cities I have seen. The river flows thru the heart of town and is flanked by a series of parks. It is a very pedestrian friendly town and I felt safe walking everywhere I went at any hour. Even though I didn't do any of the "attractions" in Christchurch, I had a great time and would def go back. The city just has a good "vibe" about it. ^ ^ ^
