My first UA flight was in the late 1980's. It was SYD-AKL-HNL-LAX and return the same way. It was a cheap way of getting to the USA and the flight included a 2 week bus tour of the West Coast. It was a special package deal when Insight Tours started their North American program.

I seem to recall that the flight/tour package was about $200 cheaper than the flight by itself.
