PeoplExpress ultimately failed for a variety of reasons, but I firmly believe that charging $0.50 for a can of soda was not among them.

I'd pay $5 for a made-to-order ice cream sundae (even with Cool Whip) on lunch and dinner flights (AFS and mid-cons), so why not pay a buck for a soda?
