I'm a bit extreme. I set up my own Asterisk server and have VoIP trunks here at home and in the UK. I have a WiFi handset that I take with me and am successful in using about 60% of the time. When it works, it works wonderfully. The problem is that WiFi handsets don't have a provision for accepting terms&conditions and/or logging on to a hotspot. So there's no way to use it with T-mobile or the many hotspots that are free but require you to accept T&Cs before giving you access. I have the best luck in restaurants and local coffee shops where the wifi is truly free and unfettered. Where I get the most use is in my hotel room. I have a WiFi travel router that I attach to the hotel broadband. I get the connection working with my laptop and then can use the WiFi phone at will. It is a true boon to be able to take and make calls without incurring roaming charges and the quality is almost always perfect. It saved me a fortune on a recent trip to Asia as roaming charges there run $1.99-$2.99 a minute! I've also used the same setup with other VoIP providers and the results have been the same. Haven't used Vonage as I prefer supplying my own endpoints and they lock theirs and don't allow outside equipment.
