Later standby- OK to call without going to the airport?

How about for a later standby? I have a 6AM flight that I would very much like to avoid- even standing by for an 8:30 flight would be great. Could I call anytime after 4:30 and be sure that I won't have to go to the airport, given the tight timing? (Basically, will this strategy work?)
