My wife is of the opinion that, at least in Canada, you don't earn additional segments on an AC flight if you could have done the route with fewer segments. i.e. if you go YVR => YYC => YYZ instead of a nonstop you don't earn the extra segment(s).

Is this or is this not the case? Doesn't seem worth the effort if you don't earn the segments?
