I too fall into that area. Most of my flights are less than 500 miles and cost in the $500 - $900 range. Living in ATL also makes everything non-stop so it takes a lot more trips to get to status levels.
Due to a couple segment runs, I will hit PM this month.
Out of ATL, you are going to have a hard time finding cheap segments. I'm doing mine out of BHM.
