The OP just said 'this summer'; he didn't say exactly when or for how long. Let's just arbitrarily say 20 June to 20 July. Using those dates,
(a) he could go LAX-JFK-LAX on UA for $367 + tax. He could then go JFK-KEF-JFK on FI for $982+. Total cost: $1349+ Total *A mileage: 5,000
(b) he could go LAX-LHR-LAX on UA for $1073+. He could then go LHR-KEF-LHR on FI for GBP 123 (= $218) +. Total cost: $1291+ Total *A mileage: 11,000
Which is 'more practical' for his purposes? Which is 'ridiculous'?
Of course, using different dates will give you different numbers, UA might not be the best *A option to London, etc., etc. That's why I said it was an interesting exercise.
