That might well be the case sometimes, and I guess it depends on the route etc, but I can tell you that just last month I purchased a CDG-LHR one way 3 hours before the flight and paid £39.59 for my ticket.
On the other hand it was just last week I paid over £400 for a day return to BRU when booking just the night before.
There was another thread talking about the zeroing out of lower fares on certain routes. Brussels always used to be zeroed out 3 days out with the exception of one flight each way which meant that bmi often still appeared as the cheapest if you were totally flexible but if you wanted anything sensible then you would pay heavily for not booking in advance.
