I've been amazed and gratified by the huge amount of international interest in this story. What began as almost humorous - 'a whale in London is as rare as the Queen riding a bicycle' (Swiss TV news) - became more and more tragic as the sad news unfolded.

Amongst the continuing dreadful news from Iraq and elsewhere, this was a story to bring us down to earth and shed a quiet tear.
