I flew AA once last year, and went standby for an earlier flight at DFW. What I really liked was that they showed the AA equivilent of the DM list on a monitor behind the GA. You could see EXACTLY where you were on the list, and could watch as you moved up as the list was cleared. I seem to remember that they had one list for standby's and one for upgrades.
I'd love to see United do this - it was easier for me, since I knew exactly where I stood, and it was certainly easier for the GA - she was not being interrupted every 20 seconds by someone wanting to know about upgrades or standbys.
