After reading some of the helpful responses we also called both AA and Travelo to get a change of class of fare just to get ff miles miles but still be in economy. First of all the first three agents at both AA and T, said you get all the miles in all classes and "...all economy seats are treated the same for getting ff miles."

Eventually after getting to third level managers: we were offered instead of $589 a rate person of $2,600 still for economy but get miles.

So calling them is not really a help.

Need to get those last minute miles in and this seemed like an economical way to do it.

Checked expertflyer to assure myself that I could upgrade the domestic portion (not the international with its co-pay!!) then booked it.

Called the Platinum desk and was told, after much discussion, that they could not break out of the domestic for an upgrade -- despite the fact that I have done it before. Was told any "Site59" trip can't be upgraded ever. Responded that this was travelocity, not Site59.

Accepted defeat and looked at seats in coach. Yikes, middle seats??

Called back the Platinum desk, talked with a very helpful agent who spent a LONG time convincing the Aadvantage desk that they were wrong. The key? The itinerary says "no upgrade until after ticketing." She convinced all the naysayers that this was ticketed now, so it could be broken out for a domestic upgrade. THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

If a first you don't succeed......yada yada yada.
