Some European countries and cities are easier for Americans -- especially American drivers from less urban areas -- to get by in driving than other countries and cities in Europe. Also the time of day you are doing the driving can have a huge impact. Also, I suggest that a driver who is not absolutely comfortable with shifting gears in busy traffic and urban areas to rent an automatic even if more expensive; after all, safety -- including those safety concerns related to drivers controlling their car while paying perfect attention to the road and not to "how to shift gears" -- is a primary concern.
