Kiwi Flyer had in mind the situation where you could earn miles on a partner
FFP, and yet you default to the 'home' airline's FFP because you aren't aware of how the partner FFPs actually fit your travel pattern more.
In your example, your parents would belong to this group if they put miles in JL's program even if another one (hypothetical example: AA's, once JL joins OneWorld) would actually allow them to earn and redeem on more favorable terms.
