I find the whole American attitude to alcohol distinctly confusing. A hotel I stayed at in Chicago had an "apparently" self service bar in the club level lounge but, I found guests were very proper about waiting for one of the very elusive staff to put in an appearance. That said, no one batted an eyelid the first time I entered the lounge and made the mistake of pouring myself a wine.
