But *why* must you pack many pairs of shoes? Not trying to be a jerk here, just trying to understand? At most I could see three pairs? Some walking / hiking shoes, some tevas for the beach and something to wear out to dinner? What am I missing?

I typically pack plenty...
2 pairs of trainers (day wear)
1 dress shoes
2 casual shoes (night wear)
1 sandals

By the way, I always take trips for 2 weeks at a time. I do not take a lot extra, but I refuse to wash my clothes while on holidays.
