I see Robert beat me to it, but I was digging a little deeper for a reply

I'm sorry to say this, but your systemwide upgrade isn't allowed to upgrade you on the SA flight. Our partnership with SA allows you to use your SkyMiles for award travel:
http://www.delta.com/skymiles/member_guide/award_travel_info/south_african_airways /index.jsp
The systemwide upgs
DO ALLOW you to book a DL tckt operated by AM/JM as long as it is within North America and your tckt reflects a DL flt number. Also, select flights on AF to/from CDG (check with a DL rep. for avail, and note AF will not offer First class seats).
I'm sorry this wasn't want you wanted to hear. I tried for about an hour to see what else you could do. If you have a Diners Club card, you could use your Club points. For every 2,000 pts you txfr, you get 1,000 miles in the SAA Voyager program. If their mileage upg isn't that bad, you could book a tckt through them and upgrade.
Hope this info helps.
