This is just silly. Las Ramblas is not 'shady' unless you've led a sheltered life. And every major city has pickpockets. Just don't be a moron and you won't be pickpocketed.

As to the OP, you should do a search. There are a few threads on Barcelona hotels. FWIW, I wouldn't stay at the Ritz. While the location isn't horrible and it's an easy 20 to 40 minute walk to your main attractions, I would choose Claris for location and Gran Florida on Tibidabo for best overall hotel experience in BCN.
