Not too long ago, we saw an x-ray image of something that looked like a no-sh*t, real IED. Everything about it was just too real; had this been on our annual recertification x-ray image test, I would have tagged it as a threat. Can't go into too much detail other than it had all of what most certainly appeard to be the components of a classic IED.

However, we didn't blast it with a water cannon; we notified the airport police who used a bomb dog to sniff the suspicious package. Turned out to be a video chair with stereo speakers inside of it. The configuration of the electronics for the speakers combined with the sand used to balance the bottom of the chair itself gave it a very realisticappearance of what an IED would look like. I reviewed the image (we printed it out) and tried to determine if we had overreacted or could have in any other way cleared it without notifying the police. I'm convinced that it was just too much like the real thing, and we did the right thing.

Sometimes, these things happen.
