That might well be the case sometimes, and I guess it depends on the route etc, but I can tell you that just last month I purchased a CDG-LHR one way 3 hours before the flight and paid £39.59 for my ticket.
On the other hand it was just last week I paid over £400 for a day return to BRU when booking just the night before.
