Compensation due for flights to nowhere?

Recently I took a UX flight that was supposed to go from A to B on a CRJ. After about an hour in the air, and just as we should have started descending into B, the captain announced that there was a problem with the de-icing system on the plane that precluded us from landing at B (because of cold temperatures plus rain) and required us to return to A. So about 45 minutes into the flight back to A, the captain told us that it had started to rain at A , and that we'd then have to divert to C, which was about 40 minutes from A. All told we spent about 2 hours total in the air. When we landed at C, we were given the option of flying to B on another aircraft, but after all the Mickey Mousing around I would never have been on time for the meeting I was supposed to attend at B, so I asked to be taken back to A on a flight that left an hour and a half later.

Of course I'm entitled to a refund, but I wonder what the heads think I should write a letter to Elk Grove Village, ask for something in addition, etc. as I wasted pretty much the whole day flying in a circle. In defense of the crew, they apolgized profusely and nobody really complained as it was a safety-related problem.
