There are lots and lots of high status pax between Australia/NZ and asia or north america. The large distances come to into play and those based in Australia/NZ who need to travel can clock up a lot of miles (and hence status) while they are also popular travel destinations for europeans and north americans in particular.
On SQ *G status is recognised in terms of service, but ranks behind their own PPS (top SQ status levels). That said, service is good anyway even if no status.

I totally second ur sentiments about good SQ service. I still remember my pre-Flyertalk status-less days of flying. :P
