if I'm flying first class, why can't I have the privilege of being the LAST to board?

I can't remember what airline it was... but when I was a child many many years ago(early '70s), I flew with my parents in first class. They always let all the coach passengers board and then ask the first class passenger to board. (this was on international flights)
