BLI -- I should have thought of that, too. Almost everything in Friday Harbor is in Friday harbor -- shops, restaurants etc. and well within walking distance. Most of the rest of the island is private land, homes etc. so unless you like driving on country roads looking at people's houses from the road...well... At many times of the year you can rent scooters to putt around beyond. And, if you are planning on staying overnight at a B&B, they will probably have a shuttle to the ferry.

Also, the walk-on fare for that run (non peak season) is ~$10, and the car+driver fare is ~$34.80...

It will be less expensive and you won't have to worry about car lines going out or coming back. As mentioned previously, weekends can get very backed up, especially returning to Anacortes. Because they ferry stops at several islands, they limit the number of cars that can get on at each island and you may have to wait through several ferrys to get back. As far as I know, they don't limit the number of walk-ons, so you can take whatever ferry fits your schedule.
