I checked out and then returned an hour later at Doubletree LAX - had no problem getting back my room for another 2 hrs. It had not been cleaned yet though.

Or as suggested just don't check out in the morning. Call from the airport if you have to, I don't think formal check out is really needed unless you worry about unexpected charges.
