In 2005, of my many flights to LHR, I cannot recall any that arrived early or on time. All of them were late to the gate, even if we landed early. One of the best was to land 45 mins early from CAI, only to take another hour to limp to Gate 24.
I've noticed this myself. No matter what time you arrive, you always get delayed somewhere. Either :-
i. In the air, circling for 30 minutes
ii. On the ground waiting for a tug to pull you across an active runway
iii. Waiting for a stand to become free
iv. Waiting for ground crew to move the equipment they've left in front of the stand.
v. Waiting for someone to come and fix the airbridge
vi. When v. doesn't happen, waiting for a set of steps to be pusehed to the rear exit.
vii. Waiting for a coach to take you the 100 yards back to the terminal
