I think this latest dog handling incident indicates there is something very wrong with the thought process of the ramp workers AS has here in SEA and that there is inadequate supervision to remedy that problem. I wouldnt have said this a month ago, I would have chalked it up to an isolated worker being lazy. In fact, a month ago we saw something quite similar in SEA. A ramp worker was unloading an MD-80 by throwing bags out of the cargo hold onto the tarmac. My wife and I stood there in awe, she wanted me to take pictures but I didnt. I was just standing there for 4-5 minutes saying to her, "what the hell is that guy thinking?" In the end there was a big pile of bags, it's Seattle so it was raining and they were all crushed and wet. I guess he didnt have a belt nearby and was too lazy to go get one.
I didnt think much of it until the depressurization/hole incident and then we looked at each and realized that the bag throwing incident was actually an indicator of a big problem. Someone who is too lazy to go and get a belt is too lazy to do a whole bunch of other things, some of which may impact your (my) safety. Driving carelessly, rushing to move a tug, not bothering to report contact with a plane, these are all signs of workers who either arent trained correctly or who have the wrong attitude for a job where so many human lives are at stake. I would think about changing car mechanics if I saw the employees acting the way I think the AS ramp agents are acting.
I think I'm a pretty laid back person about these things, I don't get hysterical, but I'm concerned about what I see and hear about the SEA ramp workers. I'm flying to Boston on Friday, on AS for the sole reason that I got the triple miles offer. I have another ticket on NW and could easily take that flight. I'm wondering if the next AS "incident" will shift me in that direction and away from AS for a while.
