I learned today that the interiors of the 764s. at least those used for ATL/HNL, will be reconstructed to permit the boarding of two meals, in addition to fixing the cockpit crew rest problem and auto-bonging armrest in Y. The scope of the changes may increase.
The reason that DL 53 and 54 require a stop in LAX starting 1 April 01 (the day 764s start flying the route) is not only the cockpit crew rest problem, but the fact that a CATERING stop is needed, since the 764 will not permit two meal services to be boarded. Evidently, DL 53 and 54 (ATL/HNL) are the only domestic flights that have two meal services, and someone at DL "FORGOT" that two meals take more space than one meal. Duh.
The GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS is that the interiors of the 764s (at least for DL 53 and 54) will be rebuilt to enable the boarding of two meals... with nonstop service on DL 53 and 54 scheduled to resume on 1 Sept. 01. This means that even if DALPA and DAL mgmt sign a contract, and a BE seat or equivalent magically appeared in F for pilot rest, DL 53 and 54 will continue to stop in LAX until the 764 interiors are rebuilt.
